So many like-minded potential classicists live with a fear inborn in architecture school and intellectual circles. It is a fear of appearing to be stupid and to boot to have the 'bad taste' enough to actually 'like' the Baroque. You mention Guggenheim Bilbao and they say, "It's great." I ask "What's so great about it?" They can't tell you and they are profoundly shocked when you say provocatively, "It's just a piece of junk." but they can never argue a case why it is not a piece of junk. Instead they say to you, "Oh come on, just because it is not classical." One gives up and tries once again to be 'nice'.Taeho Paikhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01246014852319072607noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4004767258734318262.post-50705266005358417882014-08-18T05:10:01.234-04:002014-08-18T05:10:01.234-04:00Renaissance paintings have a certain poignancy in ...Renaissance paintings have a certain poignancy in their representations of people - a certain emotional state that ties a 'character' rather than the actual physical being. I have seen some very capable modern painters blow up a photograph - by hand - cleaning up the odd pimple and softening the wrinkles. I always want to suggest to them that Adobe Photoshop does a much better job.Taeho Paikhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01246014852319072607noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4004767258734318262.post-42410281246684409692013-07-17T22:31:06.260-04:002013-07-17T22:31:06.260-04:00Complimenti! To me it is a mark of the person who may also be a good architect. If I was choosing students to teach, it would be about the only real measure of talent. One of the areas unaddressed by the profession is this: not everyone was born to be an architect, yet in our time so many who weren't are.Taeho Paikhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01246014852319072607noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4004767258734318262.post-17541289385626150462012-06-07T09:29:36.382-04:002012-06-07T09:29:36.382-04:00It was founded in 1608, but the lower town dates f...It was founded in 1608, but the lower town dates from a few decades later, interestingly roughly contemporary with the founded town of Richelieu in France: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richelieu,_Indre-et-LoireEmulatiohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11773405982717176805noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4004767258734318262.post-43855876902253061132012-06-07T07:21:12.441-04:002012-06-07T07:21:12.441-04:00How far back does Quebec City date? How far back does Quebec City date?Taeho Paikhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01246014852319072607noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4004767258734318262.post-5329170758669151932012-06-07T00:29:17.890-04:002012-06-07T00:29:17.890-04:00marvellous David, thank you for posting this!marvellous David, thank you for posting this!ettore mariahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17315090788845286549noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4004767258734318262.post-4258938156965081122012-04-02T20:52:43.048-04:002012-04-02T20:52:43.048-04:00Thank you, Lars. That's the only light in which the Graves award makes any sense--but it seems like it could make for some awkward speeches: "we recognize you not for your actual achievements, which are dubious, but for accidentally allowing others to actually learn a thing or two where you just sort of played around. . . thank you for vaguely suggesting a keystone or an order". Even those who support the selection surely won't avoid being reserved, at best, in their support of Graves' work, as opposed to his suggested possibilities.

But whereas I'm pretty skeptical of taking pomo into the fold of the "Grand Tradition," I'd wholeheartedly get behind a genuine revival of the sort of romanticism and verve expressed in post-punk/new pop!Ianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09262896736357535110noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4004767258734318262.post-8150897013119999242011-11-27T14:15:16.421-05:002011-11-27T14:15:16.421-05:00Ben detto.
